2024-2025 Annual Report

Inspiring the Future We Share

Dear Friends of Chiaravalle,

This past year, we have made significant progress as we embarked on the first steps of our Strategic Plan 2030.

Chiaravalle has been filled with moments that brought Dr. Montessori’s vision vividly to life. For six decades, our school has nurtured children who are not only academically accomplished and curious but who grow into resilient, compassionate, and capable human beings. This year, those qualities shone in ways that inspired all of us.

Guided by our four strategic pillars — Empower, Innovate, Nurture, and Invest — we saw students lead with confidence and purpose. From Lower Elementary changemakers who raised funds for a fellow Montessori school impacted by wildfires, to Upper Elementary ambassadors proudly sharing their Interest Fair presentations at the local senior living center, or teaming up with Middle Schoolers to prepare hundreds of lunches for our unhoused neighbors, our students reminded us that compassion in action is a powerful force for good. At Chiaravalle, agency and compassion shape student experiences.

The greater Chiaravalle community also inspired us by generously sharing time, support, and monetary gifts. Your investment in Chiaravalle continues to make a difference to students, families, and staff.

Thanks to you, we fortified the foundation that sustains our mission — meeting and exceeding our Annual Fund goal of $300K, enhancing campus safety, expanding professional development, and launching initiatives that center on students and ensure Chiaravalle is vibrant and future-ready.

To do that, we invested deeply in our people and processes. Our modern Montessori Math Project and K-8 writers’ workshop coaching series brought greater alignment and inclusivity to the curriculum, ensuring every child’s learning journey is in the “sweet spot”, both challenging and supportive. We strengthened our culture of belonging through dignity-centered practices and joyful community gatherings. We fostered adult learning and community through expanded parent education opportunities, such as Early Childhood parenting cohorts. We expanded professional learning for future school leaders through support for Montessori certification. We took the first step in introducing a school-wide comprehensive approach to social-emotional well-being thanks to a major gift, by sending fifteen faculty and administrators to RULER training. Originating from Yale, RULER (Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, and Reflect) is a framework that will provide common language and tools to enhance all aspects of well-being for students and adults in our community.

The seeds planted this year — rooted in Montessori, experiential learning, social responsibility, and human dignity — are already beginning to flourish. Your generosity and support makes this possible. Thank you for believing in the transformative power of a Chiaravalle Montessori education and for joining us (or partnering with us) in preparing the next generation to make our world more inclusive, peaceful, and beautiful.

With tremendous gratitude,

Robyn

"We adults must see the real humanity in children, the humanity which will take our place one day, if we are to have social progress. Social progress means that the next generation is better than the one before."

Alumni in Action

Shaping a Sustainable Future: The Human Side of Data, Science, and Storytelling

Chiaravalle alumni are shaping a more sustainable future. From corporate accountability to conservation insights through technology to clean water innovation, they are tackling some of today’s most pressing environmental challenges. Each brings not only expertise, but also the human skills of curiosity, creativity, and resilience — qualities first cultivated in a Montessori classroom.

From Interest Fair to Researching Moss

A chance encounter with moss in an Australian rainforest changed everything for Millie Mancini ’17. Now she’s researching moss evolution, preparing for graduate school, and founding botanical societies. The path wasn’t straightforward — it took courage to leave her first college and trust her instincts about the kind of learning that energizes her.

Maps, Melodies, and Making Things Better

By day, Sam Frederickson ’12 maps Chicago’s fiber optic infrastructure from his downtown office. By night, he’s making music with two bands. This GIS analyst and musician embodies the Montessori spirit of stewardship — whether pulling invasive buckthorn as a child or mapping city fiber today, he’s always tending the world around him.

I Don't Know That, Yet

Andrew Inigo Santiago ’11 develops sponges that absorb oil from marine spills, can be wrung out to collect the absorbed oil, then be deployed again. As Laboratory and Operations Manager for Coral Innovations, they’re tackling water contamination through nanotechnology. Their secret weapon? A growth mindset learned at Chiaravalle: “I don’t know that, yet.”

From Counting Beads to Corporate Scorecards

Liv Gwilliam ’13 helps hold corporations accountable for real sustainability action. At CDP, a global nonprofit in London, she separates companies truly making change from those “just saying the right things.” Her secret? Early Montessori lessons in storytelling that still guide her work today.
