Early Childhood
Early Childhood in Action
This video showcases Early Childhood students during a typical morning work period. In the flow of the morning, students gather for lessons, work independently or in small groups, and transition between tasks. Freedom of movement is a key component to Montessori classrooms.
Look for children demonstrating the four main elements of an Early Childhood classroom: concentration, cooperation, order, and independence.

What do academics look like at the Early Childhood level?
In the Early Childhood Montessori classroom, before a child even begins to explore more formal academic concepts, they experience preparation through a carefully designed environment and hands-on materials that instill core concepts in direct and indirect ways. Everything in the classrooms, from the shelves down to the materials themselves, are intentionally laid out from left to right to prepare the child's eye for reading. Likewise, materials designed to engage the child in sensorial exploration also incorporate base 10. All this preparation serves to help children develop an innate familiarity with foundational concepts that helps them feel more successful when they approach more formal academic materials.
More information about the Early Childhood academic curriculum can be found here.
Details on program times and offerings can be found here.
Why is the Kindergarten year so important?
The Kindergarten year at Chiaravalle is a very special time for five- and six-year-olds. Our Early Childhood Program is a three year cycle, which means that Kindergarten is the capstone year when everything comes together.
Academically and socially, Kindergarten students are ready for more including a Kindergarten curriculum, Writer’s Workshop, specials, and field trips.
How do you handle meals and snack?
All Early Childhood students bring their own snacks. Full day students, including Kindergartners, bring a lunch and eat family-style in the classroom. Additionally, there are days when snack preparation is part of the classroom practical life curriculum.
Children enrolled in Before School are served a cold breakfast if they arrive before 8 am.
How do you handle nap?
If your child stays at school until 3 pm or later, they have an opportunity to nap after lunch. Children bring a blanket and a pillow from home, and a lovey if they want one.
Some children at this age are transitioning away from a nap. If that's your child, you’ll let their teacher know what's going on at home. Children who aren't in Kindergarten have a quiet rest time for about 25 minutes.

Elementary
Elementary in Action
These videos showcase Elementary students during a typical 3-hour work morning. In the flow of the morning, students gather for lessons, work independently or in small groups, and transition between tasks. Freedom of movement is a key component to Montessori classrooms.
One goal is for students to complete a full work cycle with confidence. That means a student knows which lessons have been presented, can independently choose a work, lay out and complete the activity, then document it in a recording notebook, and clean up. The continued practice throughout their years at Chiaravalle is one reason why so many high school teachers and guidance counselors talk about our graduates’ ability to manage their time and work and advocate for themselves as learners.

What are your program options?
School is open from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. We offer before and after school as well as extracurricular options and athletics. Elementary program-specific details can be found here.
What do academics look like at the Elementary level?
In a Montessori setting you have a three hour work morning where kids are working independently working with partners or groups getting lessons with teachers using a list of learning objectives, called a work plan, as the road map for engaging with the curriculum.
Montessori inspires intrinsic motivation and choice, so that students are more engaged in what they're learning from the start because they get to work with peers.
Part of what makes it possible is the initial expectations and classroom setup, but the balance is also about freedom and responsibility. We expect that students are working at work time. We also expect they're going to take a snack break.
Our teachers are trying get students into deep learning, that they're engaged and excited and sustain that and they build stamina over time.
Elementary academic curriculum information can be found at here.
Details on program-specific options can be found here.
Do you offer extracurriculars and athletics?
Absolutely. Chiaravalle Elementary and Middle School students dig deeper into individual areas of interest including art, drama, drumming, coding, and chess, as well as sports like spring and fall running, volleyball, and basketball. Independent Work Time and LessonsA three hour uninterrupted work period is a core Montessori principle, which promotes deep learning, academic engagement, and time management skills. Students work from a work plan that outlines their individual goals. Teachers differentiate by offering lessons to various age groupings. Students learn to balance large projects which take multiple days (or weeks) with smaller assignments that can be accomplished in a single session. They earn the freedom to venture to the Library, Garden, and Da Vinci Studio to research, explore, and create artistic extensions to their learning. Friends can break to enjoy a snack brought from home and chat before moving into the next academic challenge. Math | Language | Cultural Subjects | Practical Life |
